"We have a website, but nobody can find it on Google" is one of the most common complaints we hear. It's almost always one of a handful of specific, fixable issues. Here's how to diagnose and fix each one.
First, check if Google has indexed your site at all
Search `site:yourdomain.com` on Google. If nothing appears, your site likely isn't indexed at all, which means none of your pages can show up in search results, regardless of how good the content is.
Common causes of a non-indexed site:
- No sitemap submitted to Google Search Console
- A stray `noindex` tag left over from development, blocking the whole site
- A brand-new site that simply hasn't been crawled yet
Second, check whether you're even targeting the right terms
A site can be perfectly indexed and still invisible if it's not actually structured around the terms customers search. A generic homepage titled just "Home" or "Welcome" gives Google nothing specific to match against real searches like "web design company Kampala" or "clinic in Ntinda".
Third, look at your technical SEO basics
- Page titles and meta descriptions: every page needs a unique, descriptive one, not a default template value
- Heading structure: one clear H1 per page describing what it's actually about
- Mobile-friendliness: Google effectively ranks the mobile version of your site as the primary version now
- Page speed: slow sites get pushed down in rankings, not just abandoned by visitors
Fourth, check your Google Business Profile
For local searches specifically, an unclaimed or incomplete Google Business Profile is one of the most common reasons a legitimate, established business doesn't appear for searches in its own area.
Fifth, consider your backlink profile
If no other websites link to yours, Google has fewer signals that your site is trustworthy or relevant. This doesn't need to mean expensive link-building, even a handful of legitimate local directory listings and mentions helps.
Sixth, give it time
SEO is not instant. A newly launched or newly optimised site typically takes 6 to 12 weeks to show meaningful movement in rankings, even when everything is set up correctly. If it's been less than that, some patience is warranted alongside the fixes above.
