Google Business Profile setup for Ugandan businesses, step by step

A free, 20-minute setup that meaningfully improves how easily customers find you on Google. Here's exactly how to do it properly.

Google Business Profile is free, takes about 20 minutes to set up properly, and is one of the highest-impact things a Ugandan business can do for its visibility on Google. Most businesses either skip it entirely or set it up badly. Here's how to do it right.

Step 1: Claim or create your listing

Search your business name on Google. If a listing already exists, unclaimed, claim it through Google Business Profile Manager. If nothing exists, create a new listing from scratch.

Step 2: Choose the right business category

Your primary category matters more than most people realise, it directly affects which searches you show up for. Be specific: "Law firm" ranks you differently than "Legal services", even though they sound similar. Choose the category your actual customers would search.

Step 3: Fill in every field, completely

  • Business name exactly as it appears on your signage, no keyword-stuffing
  • Full, accurate address, verified through Google's verification process
  • Phone number that's actually staffed
  • Website link, pointing to your homepage or a relevant landing page
  • Opening hours, including holidays if they differ

Step 4: Write a real description

Use the description field to clearly explain what you do and who you serve, naturally including terms customers would actually search, without stuffing keywords unnaturally.

Step 5: Add photos, and keep adding them

Listings with more photos get significantly more engagement. Add real photos of your premises, team, and products or services, and update them periodically, Google rewards active, maintained listings over static ones.

Step 6: Turn on messaging or booking if relevant

Depending on your business type, Google Business Profile supports direct messaging or appointment booking straight from the listing, removing a step between a search and a customer contacting you.

Step 7: Ask for reviews, and respond to all of them

Reviews are one of the strongest ranking signals for local search. Make a habit of asking satisfied customers directly, and respond to every review you receive, this shows both Google and future customers that you're active and engaged.

Step 8: Post updates periodically

Google Business Profile lets you post short updates, offers, or news, similar to a social media post. Businesses that use this feature regularly tend to see better engagement on their listing overall.

This is entirely free and something any business can do without technical help. If you'd rather have it set up properly for you as part of a broader SEO push, get in touch.
